Today is Election Day in the United States. In a democracy such as ours, Election Day reminds us that we can choose whom we want to represent and govern us. Mindfulness is like Election Day, because with mindfulness we get to choose too. We choose where to put our attention. We choose to follow our breath or our thoughts. We choose to eat mindfully or mindlessly. We choose to pay attention to what is going on around us or not. Every aspect of our lives has the potential to improve when we choose a mindful approach. Driving to work and admiring the passing scenery is better than silently cursing traffic under our breath. Sipping a glass of juice is better than chugging it. Savoring our meal is better than wolfing it down. Slowing down and paying attention to what we are doing is better than powering through to get to the next item on our “To-Do” list. Each time we choose to be present in the moment, we are improving the experience of that moment. Do this often enough and those moments add up to a lifetime well spent. Today, choose mindfulness and see where your choice takes you. Will you vote for mindfulness on this Election Day? Please write your comments below.
