I always enjoyed the first day of school because it meant a new pair of shoes and a matching outfit. I would walk to the school bus stop with bookbag and brown sack lunch in tow. Because I came of age in the 1960’s and 1970’s, my lunch consisted of bologna or American cheese on white bread.
These sandwiches, made lovingly by my mother, were not the healthiest choices, but at the time they were the norm. Today as a mindful eater, I pay attention to the nutritional value of the food I eat. In my TAME programs, we call that using Outer Guidance. This is not to say I don’t occasionally have a grilled cheese sandwich. I do. I love them! But now I eat them after I have checked in with myself to be sure that they are the right food, in the right amount, at the right time for me.
As you prepare your lunch for today, try to make a mindful choice using all your senses and your Outer Guidance. By the way, what did you eat for lunch when you were in school?
