The form of meditation that I teach is mindfulness-based meditation which focuses attention on the breath. There are other forms of meditation that have been around for a long time which you might like to try. Here are some that may interest you: Transcendental Meditation, made famous by Maharishi, will have you sitting in a lotus position, silently chanting a mantra and seeking to rise above the world’s negativity. In Kundalini Meditation, with its roots in Buddhist and Hindu teachings, you will focus on your breath as it flows through the energy centers of the body, called chakras. This meditation is often done in yoga classes. Qi Gong is a form of exercise that has meditative qualities. Begun in China, Qi Gong combines breathing techniques and movement. This form of meditation is very popular because of its health benefits and is often practiced outdoors. Mantra Meditation uses a single word or sound, such as “Om”, as the object of awareness. This word or sound is repeated silently or aloud throughout the practice session to focus the mind. Rather than focusing on one’s breath or a sound or word, Movement Meditation focuses on gentle movement. Light stretching and slow walking are examples of movement meditation. Some beginners prefer movement meditation to start a meditation practice because they find it easier than using the breath. Google these different forms of meditation to find settings where they are practiced and go. What have you got to lose?
