If you have heard me speak, you may remember that I often use the example of the unexpectedly empty popcorn tub to explain mindless eating. That example is frequently followed up by the question: “how can I go to the movies and not eat popcorn?” Who says you have to go to the movies and not eat popcorn? Not me!
Remember, mindful eating is not about not eating, it’s about eating with awareness. It’s about eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re full. It’s about eating foods that you enjoy and satisfy you. If you, like millions of people, love to eat popcorn while watching movies, eat it. Just stay aware. When you notice that you are distracted by the movie while your hand is in the popcorn bucket, that’s mindfulness. Notice it. You can still have popcorn, just pay attention. You might also choose to eat one kernel at a time rather than one fistful at a time. That will also slow down your eating and allow you to notice the popcorn and taste it more than if you were just shoveling it in.
All of this being said, if you find yourself eating popcorn while being distracted by the movie, it’s not the end of the world. Just remember that the next time that you choose to eat, do so mindfully.
