As you practice being mindful in your life and with your eating, you may find yourself being critical of yourself for those moments when you are not being mindful. If that is happening to you, it may be because you are striving for perfection not presence. One of the principles of Buddhist psychology upon which much of mindfulness is based is “non-striving.” Don’t try so hard! Your task is simply to be present with whatever is, even if what is is being mindless! Practice being present and the rest will follow. Release the need to be perfect, and be with what is. Your body, mind and spirit will thank you.
